Happy endings always start with hope.
"There’s not a day that will go by that I won’t think of you." (Hook)
as compared to:
"This isn’t over. I’ll see both of you again." (Neal)
Neal seems to be in denial and seems to be more worried about whether or not HE will see Emma and Henry again, while Hook seems to acknowledge what is going to happen and wants to let Emma know, before she goes, just exactly how much he cares for her.
Hook stood in front of the door, waiting, baited, breathless. He knocked again, did she not hear him? A year had gone by, and still seconds seemed like hours, minutes seemed like days. Finally, he heard the latch unlocking and the door swung open.
She stood there, vulnerable in her pajamas yet fierce in her expression. Nothing had changed since that awful day a year ago, except there was no recognition in her probing eyes, no acknowledgement of the past they had shared and the connection they had. But it was her. She was the one who had raised him from his dark abyss. The one who let him in, a weary pirate with half a heart and a hook for a hand. The one whose soul fit his together like a puzzle piece; empty and alone when they were apart and a blazing sun, wholesome and fierce when they were together. It didn’t matter that she didn’t remember him. She was his world, the woman who truly made him a man, and he realized in that moment that until now he had never truly found a home. For years he had sailed the seas, never stopping, never easing on the throttle. And now, oceans away, years apart, Hook realized that he had found his home. It didn’t matter if it was in the middle of the desert or at the end of the world. Wherever she went, he would follow, until the breath left his lungs and his heart failed to beat.
